About Us

Anyone who has questions about the canals of New York State will discover plenty of answers through work done by the Canal Society members. The collections of the Society include thousands of historic pieces, items ranging from books and papers to models of historic structures, original signage , and canal artwork.

For most of the Society’s history, there have been regular field trips to different canals in New York and beyond. Each trip generates a guidebook that includes detailed information about the sites on the trip, including maps and photos. The field work done for these books is invaluable. Also, the Society regular publishes Bottoming Out, a scholarly newsletter, and past issues of these are also available.

Society members love to learn and many also love to write about what they’ve learned! We are proud of the books that our members have written and highlight them as background material for other canal enthusiasts.
