2010 World Canals Conference

held September 19 – 24, 2010

The Canal Society of New York State

was a main sponsor of the 2010 World Canals Conference.

Primary sponsors were the New York State Canal Corporation, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission, I Love NY the City of Rochester, Monroe County, and other significant sponsors were Time Warner, Bergmann Associates, AJ Costello and Son Development, Mark IV Construction, Constellation Brands, and others.

The event brought together delegates from 17 different countries over three times the number of countries than the WCC Rochester in 2000, to experience the canals in the Rochester area. Through seminars, tours and even a flotilla, canal managers, scholars, and enthusiasts and others learned about New York State's legendary Erie Canal and others around the world. The aim of the Conference was to bring together canal and waterway practitioners and enthusiasts to learn about a variety of topics related to canals, including history, the protection of historic canals, revitalization of canal systems, commercial shipping, new and awe inspiring canal construction projects, and canals as a means to promote tourism and encourage economic development.

Almost 100 presentations were made over the course of the conference. Many speakers agreed to share their presentations with people who could not attend. These notes and presentations from the conference speakers are archived here, on the CSNYS website. What becomes readily apparent to the observer is that the Planning Committee succeeded in putting together an extraordinary conference of the highest caliber as evidenced by the diversity of presentations, the quality of each, and the fact that approximately 40% were international in scope. This record of accomplishment set a standard for World Canals Conferences that will not be easily eclipsed.
